2012 Lexus GS

The Lexus GS is a series of mid-size luxury sports sedans / executive cars sold by Lexus since 1993. Designed to fill the gap between the ES and LS, and to provide Lexus with a performance sedan to compete in the mid-luxury class, three generations of the GS have been produced to date. The first incarnation of the GS was introduced in 1993 in the United States, Europe and selected markets in Asia. The second generation model premiered in 1998, using a new platform and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The current third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, comes in both V6, V8, and hybrid versions, later known as the GS 450h performance hybrid. The third generation GS is also the first model to feature Lexus' own L-finesse styling upon its introduction.

In Japan, the equivalent Toyota Aristo (トヨタ・アリスト) was sold from its 1991 debut until the introduction of the Lexus marque and the third generation GS in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the first two generations of the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The Aristo nameplate ("Aristo" is Greek for "the best") was discontinued following the debut of the Lexus marque and the third generation GS in Japan.

Styled by the famous Italdesign Giugiaro firm, and equipped with an independent, double-wishbone suspension setup, the Toyota Aristo was launched in October 1991, offering two inline-6 powered versions for the Japanese market: the 3.0Q and 3.0V. The Aristo 3.0Q (codename JZS147) featured a 2JZ-GE engine which produced 226 hp (169 kW), while the Aristo 3.0V (JZS147) was equipped with a 24-valve twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE engine which produced 276 hp (205 kW). This twin-turbo engine was the same as could be found in the Toyota Supra RZ (JZA80). In 1992, a third model, the V8-powered 4.0Zi-Four (codename UZS143), joined the Aristo lineup. This model came with standard four-wheel drive and a 250 hp (186 kW) 1UZ-FE engine. This V8 had also been used in the first generation Lexus LS and the Toyota Crown Majesta. However, the only engine available for export markets was the 2JZ-GE inline-6.

In February 1997, Lexus debuted the "High Performance Sedan" (HPS) concept at the Chicago Auto Show, previewing the design direction for the redesigned GS. In August 1997, the second generation Aristo was launched in Japan, codenamed JZS160 (S300 version) for models with the 2JZ-GE engines and JZS161 (V300 version) for those with the 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo engines. VVT-i was now standard, resulting in a bump in torque. The twin-turbo version was available with electronic four-wheel steering, stability control and an automatic gearbox with a manual sequential mode. No four-wheel drive models were offered.

The 2000 model facelift, first sold in the 2001 model year in North America, was the only year with any major changes in the second generation GS. New clear tail lights with turn signal indicators were added to the trunk area, as well as a slightly revised grille and very subtly tinted headlights on the front end. Xenon high-intensity discharge headlights were now standard on the V8 and optional on the I6. Inside, more wood trim was added, and steering wheel shift buttons were now also featured on the GS 300. The V8 engine also received a 0.3-liter bump in displacement and the model was renamed GS 430 (UZS161). Peak horsepower was unchanged, but torque increased to 325 lb·ft (441 N·m).

The GS interior was available with leather bird's-eye maple or walnut trim. Major standard features ranged from a 10-way driver and front passenger power and heated seats with three-position Lexus Memory System, SmartAccess keyless system with push-button start, a driver-side hidden drop-down panel for infrequently used controls, standard 7-inch touchscreen display, and LED lighting in the cabin. Unique to the Lexus GS series was a three-pod instrument cluster with machined aluminum facings and an electrochromic feature. Optional features ranged from a power moonroof to a discrete 5.1 surround sound 14-speaker 330 watt Mark Levinson premium sound system, XM-satellite radio and DVD-based navigation with backup camera and Bluetooth technology. Competitors to the Lexus GS included the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S80, Audi A6, Jaguar XF, Infiniti M, and Acura RL.

The Lexus GS was used in Motorola Cup North American Street Stock Championship touring car series competition in 1998, beginning with two GS 400 race vehicles driven by Team Lexus in its inaugural season. For 1999, Team Lexus achieved its first victory with the GS 400 in its sixth race at Road Atlanta. The GS 400 was raced until 2001, when Team Lexus switched to the IS 300. In the mid 2000s, the GS 400 was entered in the V8Star Series touring car racing season, with Ronny Melkus competing in the V8 GS in 2003.

According to Motor Trend, the next generation GS will debut in 2011. The LF-Gh concept vehicle revealed at the 2011 New York International Auto Show has revealed what the fourth generation Lexus GS will look like.

Lexus Luggage

Today Lexus announced its new product range. Don't expect to hear a new car, that is the new luggage series. Like Porsche, Lexus decided to extend its brand with luggage and they expect people to buy them! However, there is a serious problem with Lexus. Unfortunately, except USA nobody likes Lexus. Even in Japan people don't drive Lexus that much, they prefer Mercedes. Basically, Lexus is the king only in USA and not in Europe.

Sure, Lexus is a good car and reliable and efficient and boring and lack of passion (CT 200h is not that bad but not that good either). These types of positive and negative sides can be found in other brands also, however what makes them different is the emotional bond among the brand and the consumers. Therefore, we buy Porsche Design products and visit Ferrari Stores. These brands also have adverse sides but the emotional approach overcomes on those.

Unfortunately, Lexus does not have that type of bond among consumers. So, I am not expecting to see Lexus luggage that often.

Toyota and Lexus are calling us again

This is a social responsibility post!

I recently read the news about Lexus and Toyota recall about brake fluid. Based on press release, brake hydraulic may leak from brake master cylinder and your brake will flash and you will lose some of your braking power.

More basically; if your brake fluid escapes from the car and your brake pedal feels like chewing gum, there is one explanation for this. You are done!! That small brake light which is flashing is the thin line between live and death. So if you have any of these very dull looking, boring, very boring Lexus or Toyota cars start running to workshop. I know new cars looks like Playstation games but there is no restart button!!! So, don’t waste your time going around internet and go to workshop now :)

The interesting point of this recall, what was Toyota thinking while designing the brake system. Come on, hydraulic brake system is older than electric windows. And they should have more experience of brake systems than heating system!

Do you want fake engine noise for your car ?

Since the hybrid phenomenon started a question popped up in my brain. The hybrid cars have the capability to drive through electric motor thanks to batteries. And also they are very silent, efficient and you know the rest. Hybrids are the tree huggers!

But there was a minor detail many people ignored! The electric engines are too silent, that’s not something bad but they too silent for pedestrians. You won’t notice this until a hybrid was one meter away to hit you.

The ultra silent hybrids emerged a new problem of car sound. Because, many of us understand that a car is approaching to us by hearing the engine noise. And hybrids do not have an engine noise while they are using the electric motor. So, we will not hear anything and hybrid might crash to us. I think there are some incidents have happened.

Today Toyota announced that, they will be coupling hybrid vehicles with virtual engine noise! I have never seen more ridiculous that this. A car is making faking noise !?! I hope they will be working with game companies. I cannot imagine this hilarious condition of automotive business. They are trying to find ways to make fake engine noise. I am sure some tuning companies will remap the noise and your Toyota Prius can sound like a Ferrari :)
I am sure some ladies are reading this blog, and I would like provide a different explanation. Hybrids situation is like making fake noises for your high heels and help other people to realize that you are approaching. It is that simple :)

Granite to sour cream by Toyota

A few days ago I noticed an advertisement on internet. Don’t think I started using internet last week! This advertisement was totally different. This advertisement, actually these two advertisements were posted by Toyota and Lexus. Until now there is no problem with this. And that’s very usual!

However the advertisement was saying “To Find Latest Recall Information, Click Here”! This message was written by Toyota and Lexus. Toyota used to be the most reliable car manufacturer on planet, they were very bad design, very dull at handling, very bad at diesel engines, very bad at interior design. And they managed to be very bad at manufacturing. What Toyota have achieved cannot be achieved by any other company.

For decades, they were generating word of mouth about Toyota’s reliability. Toyota is rock solid, granite solid, they replaced the car when the headlights break down and etc. However Toyota never focused on the fact which I mentioned in previous section. Therefore Toyota and Lexus cannot go beyond the car which is preferred just for its reliability. I have never heard anyone who bought a Toyota because its soul or its interior or anything related with emotions.

Basically, what Toyota has achieved is like transforming granite into sour cream. Unbreakable granite became sour cream which you can find on top of your frappucino at any Starbucks shop. Whenever you order your frappucino with extra cream, remember Toyota :)

Enviromental Bicycle by Lexus :O

In automotive industry you can find many interesting things! As I mentioned earlier, you can have Porsche power drill, weird looking car branded shoes, pointlessly expensive car branded pencils and many interesting things, until now. Today, the world's the most boring car brand announced something more pointless than Porsche's power drill. Hybrid bicycle! Yes, a hybrid, an environmental bicycle. People who has nobody about hybrids, I would like to explain quickly. Hybrid is a technology which combine electric and petrol engine together to reduce CO2 level and offer more economy. This technology is designed for vehicle which are running with combustion engine not with feet!

Lexus's obsession with hybrid concept helped to reveal this ultimately pointless bicycle. Who on earth will going to buy a hybrid bicycle. I know there are many people who bought Apple iPad without knowing what to do with that but this is more pointless than iPad. Bicycle suppose to be ride by feet for sport or for fitness not to save the earth! Or to show off that I care environment and I ride this pointless thing.

The batteries are charged by regenerative brakes, I hope that these brakes are working properly. And it has 8 speed auto gearbox with 240W electric motor. Actually there is one thing nice in this bike, its design. Lexus's success on dull design on cars cannot be seen on this bicycle and I do hope that they will try this on their cars also ;)
